In today’s world, people are worried about threats from many different quarters. From weather-related emergencies to terror threats, homeowners are contemplating ways to make their homes more secure and to enhance their emergency preparedness. By creating an emergency space in your home, you can ensure that you are as prepared as possible for most types of emergencies that arise. Consider the following tips when readying your emergency space.

Choose a Secure Location

It’s important to choose a secure location in your home for your emergency space. If you aren’t sure where to site this spot in your home, our contractors can help you choose the ideal spot. We can even help you reinforce walls and make other structural improvements to ensure that your home is as stable as it can be should an earthquake occur for example. Basements and cellars are obvious places to create an emergency space, but if you don’t have these areas in your home, our contractors will help you choose or create the ideal spot for staying safe. We can create a safe room within a room. We can anchor heavy-duty walls and flooring to ensure that the space is as safe as possible in the event of an earthquake or tornado.

Shelving

Part of creating an emergency preparedness space is to stock it with water and food. In case of flooding, you want to make sure that your supplies are safe so that they won’t be contaminated by water that may seep into your emergency area. Our crews routinely install shelving in both commercial and residential structures. You can install heavy-duty shelving that can easily accommodate supplies like water and canned goods. It’s ideal to have multiple shelves so you can store a wide array of necessities like disinfecting agents, medical kits, toilet paper, and other essentials.

Security

When creating a safe room, security experts typically advise people to choose a room or area without a window. Again, if you don’t have a basement room, you can potentially use a walk-in closet, a laundry room, or even within an attached garaged. If possible, install a steel door and high-quality security lock. If you do use a room with a window as your emergency safe space, you should include interior shutters and, possibly, even ballistic film to enhance protection. You might also install bullet-proof security glass. You might even wish to install a landline for the space or include security cameras outside of the room to monitor what may be happening while you’re locked inside the room.

Bathroom

It’s important to consider installing a bathroom in your emergency space if possible. Otherwise, you’ll need to consider substitute options for an actual toilet. We can install small water closets that include a toilet and small sink.

If you are concerned about specific types of emergencies, talk to our contractors about designing unique features that will help you with emergency preparedness. Keep in mind that we can build your space from the ground or modify an existing area of your home to suit your emergency preparedness needs.
