Having a problem with your contractor can feel extremely frustrating, but problems often arise because of failed communication. So, it’s important to communicate with your contractor as soon as you become dissatisfied with an aspect of your project. Also, keep in mind that disagreements often occur, but that shouldn’t derail your renovation or remodeling project. When you keep the following tips in mind, you can manage problems with your contractor in the best possible ways.

Don’t Wait

It’s important for homeowners to speak up as soon as they become aware of a problem with their project. Whether the problem is due to the quality of workmanship, the materials, or the manner in which the workers are attending the project, these issues should be broached right away. Left undiscussed, problems are apt to get worse instead of better. If you feel frustrated about how your remodeling project is going, you should speak up immediately–and document your meeting. Don’t let the project proceed further until you and your contractor can discuss the issues on your mind.

Send a Certified Letter

If you dislike confrontations or if your attempts to communicate problems feel brushed aside, send your contractor or their firm a certified letter outlining your issues in writing. This way, you can request that they address these issues in writing and let you know how they plan to solve the problems–in writing. While this may appear to escalate the issue to a more formal level, it actually protects both you and the contractor from falling into the “we said, they said” problem. Working out issues in writing rather than verbally is a safeguard for everyone involved.

When Things Get Messy

When you work with a professional certified contractor, things shouldn’t get messy. However, if you are truly dissatisfied with your contractor’s performance, you can cut ties and move on with a different contractor so that you can prevent your project from derailing. Of course, this prospect can be messy because your contractor may be out time and there may be purchased materials. In such cases, it’s important to refer to your contract and try to work things out as fairly as possible so your case doesn’t have to head to court. Most contractors will certainly want to avoid the time and expense of court, but if you’ve hired someone uncertified or unqualified, you may have no option.

When you work with a high-quality contracting firm, you can rest assured that your contractor will do their utmost to solve problems quickly. After all, it is in your contractor’s best interest to see that you are well satisfied with the project. While snags are often inevitable, they can be minimized with communication and a willingness to work things out.
