no-dogEven a small-scale remodeling project could pose risks to your household, but a large renovation definitely requires adherence to safety measures. While your general contractor is likely to provide you with instructions regarding safety around their work site, you should also keep the following tips in mind to ensure that you and your family remain safe throughout the remodeling project.

Keep Kids Out

Although kids are likely to be curious when they hear the buzzing saws in their home, it’s important to keep kids completely out of the way during your renovation. From sharp tools to hazardous chemicals, a work site is no place for kids. Moreover, it’s not efficient to let them get in the way of contractors who have other thing on their mind than minding children. It’s best to keep children well out of the way during any construction project and supervise them at all times.

Keep Pets Away

Like kids, pets can easily get underfoot during a household project. To ensure their safety, it’s best to relocate them to a room that is not involved in the renovation or in their crate. If you keep your pet outdoors, make sure that they will not be in the way of your contractors as they come and go with materials. In addition, be sure to keep your pet’s food and water away from the work site so nothing sharp or potentially dangerous falls into the bowls.

Ventilate

In many cases, remodeling involves the use of paint, adhesives, and even sealers. These materials are associated with industrial odors that you don’t want to breathe in. During your remodeling process, be sure to ventilate the work area as well as possible to disperse the chemical odors. You should also change the filters of your HVAC system once a week to ensure that clean air is circulating through your home.

Hang Tarps and Plastic Sheeting

Saw dust is an inevitable part of the remodeling process, but you can ensure that dust remains contained when you hang tarps and plastic sheeting around the entire work site. This simple step keeps dust at bay, but will also protect the rest of your home from pollutants and other types of debris. Contractors often come prepared with plastic sheeting so check with them before you purchase these materials.

Make sure to have a long conversation with our contractors about safety and security before launching your project. Depending on the nature of the renovation, there may be more precise instructions to follow regarding your project. By adhering closely to all safety tips, you can reduce the risk of an accident and protect your household by every possible means.
