carpetChoosing one wrong material for your bathroom can completely compromise the success of your remodeling project–and wind up becoming a colossal waste of cash. If you’re planning to makeover your bathroom, be sure to keep the following materials out of the picture.

Bamboo

Bamboo has become immensely popular as a durable, eco-friendly building material, but if you choose to install bamboo in your bathroom, remember that bamboo’s natural mildew and mold resistance does not mean immunity. In the moisture-rich setting of the bathroom, your bamboo is likely to suffer considerably in a relatively short period of time.

Hardwood

Hardwood is gorgeous, and it isn’t surprising that so many people want to put in their bathrooms, but the wood is vulnerable to moisture. Even if you are meticulous about drying off before stepping onto the wood floor, the moisture and condensation from a hot shower are going to affect this material. Once your hardwood warps or bends, it becomes irreparable.

Linoleum Tiles

Although whole-sheet linoleum is a good choice for a bathroom, linoleum tiles are not. The linoleum itself has an oil-based sealer that allows it to stand up to bathroom moisture. Unfortunately, the moisture is able to penetrate the seams between the tiles, which then can cause problems for this type of flooring. Rather than dealing with the headache of tile replacement, opt of whole-sheet linoleum, which is also an affordable option.

Wallpaper

Although many contractors are ok with wallpaper in the bathroom, many will encourage homeowners to avoid its use in any moisture-rich setting. The moisture can cause your wallpaper to unpeel from the wall, especially at the seams. Once this occurs, your walls can become a hotbed for mold. If you do choose for wallpaper in your bathroom, stick to a powder room. There are some types of wallpaper that are marketed for bathroom use specifically, so if you must paper your bathroom, definitely opt for this variety.

Carpet

Installing carpet in a bathroom definitely causes our contractors to scratch their heads in disbelief, but many people, surprisingly, have opted to carpet their bathrooms. Sadly, it only takes one overflowing sink or toilet to completely destroy your carpeting. Moreover, the condensation in the room will settle on your carpet and eventually lead to the development of mildew and mold. It won’t be long before your carpeted bathroom reeks with must. Instead, opt for washable throw rugs that you can air out regularly.

If you avoid these materials in your bathroom remodel, you’re likely halfway to a successful makeover.
